Computer science can be defined as “the study of computers and algorithmic processes, including their principles, their hardware and software design, their applications, and their impact on society. In other words, computer science is the study of why and how computers work. Computer science emphasizes problem solving and pushes students to be active creators—rather than passive consumers—of computer technologies. Programming, or coding, is one aspect of the computer science field of study but is not the sole focus.Ìý
In October 2022, the Board of Regents approved the recommendation to include computer science under the umbrella of career and technical education (CTE). The change has created new flexibilities for districts and BOCES:Ìý
- Computer science can now be used to meet the 1.75 units CTE requirement at the middle school level.Ìý
- Computer science can be used as CTE coursework to meet Option 1 requirements for the CDOS Commencement Credential/CDOS 4+1 Pathway.Ìý
- Computer science can be used as part of a five-unit sequence in CTE toward a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation.Ìý
- Computer science teachers can teach Career and Financial Management and schools can create ¿ìè³É°æÊÓƵ-approved CTE programs in computer science taught by computer science teachers.ÌýÌý
This change does NOT mean that schools must consider computer science as CTE or that computer science should only be accessible to students in a CTE program.Ìý
